Collar Sizing:

Please see Mucky Mutt's measuring guide located in the pictures. The best and most accurate way is to measure your dog's neck with a soft measuring tape. You can also measure their current collar but make sure you follow the directions in our picture. The inch size you pick will be the middle holes (3rd or 4th out of 6) on the collar to allow for options smaller and larger if need be. If you have any questions about sizing, please contact me before placing your order and we can help you choose the best size for your dog! We want the collar to fit perfectly and am happy to discuss sizing with you. We recommend 3/4" width for smaller to medium dogs and 1" for medium to large.

Hardware Choice:

Our Nickel, Rose Gold and Matte Black hardware is plated. Please note that plated hardware is susceptible to potential scratching/wearing over time. This does not impact the hardware's strength or durability. We offer a brass and stainless steel upgrade on this collar as well.

Collar Creation:
Mucky Mutts Collars & Leashes are lovingly handmade products that will stand the test of time. We handmake all of our products in our workshop. We use Standard Biothane that has a 1000lb break strength per 1" width. We have 3 of our own dogs and used to live in the North of Canada where we both rescued dogs and spent a lot of time in the woods with our own. We currently live in Nova Scotia and love hiking and doing both leash and off leash trails. Biothane is the only material that we have found to be durable, long lasting and easy to to get the muck off! We seal all of the ends of our biothane with a product called Bioseal which gives it a nice finished, polished look.

Common Questions About Our Gear

What is Biothane?

BioThane®is the brand name of all coated webbing products made by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It’s basically a polyester webbing with a TPU or PVC coating that makes it more durable, waterproof, easy to clean and weldable.

BioThane®is more durable, cleanable, stronger and easier to maintain than leather and comes in a selction of beautiful and unique colours.

How do I clean Biothane?

The easiest “quick clean” option is to wipe your line down with a damp towel, a baby wipe, or a sanitizing wipe. This will work great for everyday surface dust and dirt.

To do a more thorough clean, fill a bowl with mild soapy water and soak your line for a few minutes. Dish soap works great. After soaking for a few minutes, wipe your gear down with a sponge to remove the dirt, then rinse and towel dry.

If there are stubborn patches (tar or sap, for example), spray a mild cleaner or some rubbing alcohol directly on the spot, let it sit, and then wipe with a cloth, a sponge, or a light abrasive like an old toothbrush. Do not use a heavy abrasive like steel wool.

After a beach trip, make sure you rinse your line, and especially the clasp, with fresh water to prevent corrosion from the salt water. Dry afterwards.

The lighter/brighter biothane colors do show dust and grime more, and may require more frequent cleaning to stay looking new.

Brass

Benefits of Brass Hardware:

We have a beautiful collection of gear with brass hardware Solid brass is an alloy metal made from copper and zinc. It is a strong and durable metal. The combination of zinc and copper contribute to the strength of the material. One of the major benefits of Solid Brass hardware is it will not rust. This makes it the perfect hardware for an owner looking for durability and long lasting dog gear. Solid Brass will however, tarnish or "patina", which appears as a dull grey or bluish green film over the top layer of the brass hardware. Some people like the look of this tarnish but others do not. In particular, it is important to consider this is you have a white dog. The patina can transfer to the dogs coat, easily washable, but some owners may find this too much upkeep.

To get the brass looking new again, make a paste using the juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of baking soda. Coat the clasp in the paste, allow to sit for up to 30 minutes, buff with a soft cloth, and then rinse with water. There are lots of other homemade brass cleaner recipes online, but this one is simple and works well.

If your clasp gets sticky (this can happen if exposed to salt water or dirt/grime over time), wash it thoroughly with a mild soap, rinse, add a few drops of WD-40 inside the clasp, and move the clasp mechanism several times to help the oil penetrate.

Plated Hardware (Nickel/Rose Gold and Matte Black)

Plated hardware is one of the most popular choices in the dog gear industry. It is light weight, resists corrosion, and allows us to offer some fun and unique colours like Matte Black and Rose Gold.

Plated hardware is made of a base metal, usually zinc alloy, steel or brass and has a finished coat on top such as Nickel, Matte Black and Rose Gold. Plating does eventually wear. This wear does not impact the quality of the hardware.

Locking Carabiners

Universal, light carabiner with bayonet locking that prevents random opening. Our locking carabiners are usually available 1/2", 3/4" and 1" widths. The snap is made of material (Anodized Aluminium) used in the aircraft industry and it has a loading capacity of more than 400 kg.
